Miss California

April 23, 2009 at 3:05 am (By Rodjean)

According to news reports, Miss California in the Miss USA contest responded to a question about gay marriage by saying that, in her opinion, marriage should be between a man and a woman. Much negative publicity ensued, and there is discussion of her crown being taken away from her.

She may be deeply philosophical, concerned about the underpinnings of our social structure. Or, she may have made a brilliant PR move. She has already upstaged the winner of the Miss USA contest. If she is lucky enough to be stripped of her title, she may create enough buzz to join the legions of zombies who receive the endless attention of the media because they have become controversial enough to become celebrities.

True believer in traditional values, or opportunist? You be the judge.

Dylan Covers

April 18, 2009 at 2:30 am (By Rodjean)

While driving today I heard Bob Dylan’s song, “Lay Lady Lay.”It is hard to think of anyone with as much talent for writing music and as little a gift of vocal range. It got me thinking of how many recording artists have done covers of Dylan songs. Here is one of my favorites:

Stevie Wonder does a version of the same song that makes my hair stand on end. Do any of you have particular favorites?

Have we changed?

April 14, 2009 at 1:17 am (By Rodjean)

Only six months have passed since October, when a sluggish economy turned into a financial panic, but sometimes it seems like six years. Each day brings home the reality to me in different ways, from the barber who needs to renegotiate his lease because people are getting fewer haircuts, to the doctor who pledged money from his IRA to settle a lawsuit and now faces financial ruin because he cannot fulfill the terms of the settlement. Most folks seem to be living the new reality, skipping life’s frivolities. A new cost consciousness is upon us. But, have we really changed, or is it all superficial? What will we be like if the tide rises?
