Hah- i started to comment here- then, i wanted to check out the comment b/cause i wanted to have the most info i could to form my comment- too funny that it was a p.s.:0)

“— by goals ranging from survival (defeating disease and hunger) to domination (what we call “defense”) to the profit motive, or some mixture of all three.”

I feel differently- i don’t think ~dominate~ and ~defense~ are quite as equal in definition. IMhumbleO. I think of defense as survival. Although, in thinking about it- it can be defensive. My comment is evolving- like any great Anthropologist would approve of. In my mind, anyway.

I’ve often felt(here come the feelings, must be i have an artist’s heart:0))- that the appreciation of life- the respect and protection of life- is hand-in-hand w/how we value it. I have never read Humanae Vitae, but i believe that as we hold the value of life- so life goes. Meaning- as we slowly degrade it’s worth- abortion, assisted suicide, ~mercy killing~… life becomes disposable.

I could say more, but i don’t know how, right now. It’s food for thought, amba. Thank you!! And, as an O/T- i loved the comments by the man who read Donbas. Tonight i heard a song called that from the Ukraine where they are campaigning in the region. I think. It was on Npr. It made me think so much of J.

Yes, part of defense is survival, and part of it is profit. Of course, they also say “The best defense is a good offense.” And one could argue, dominate or be dominated. It is, after all, a fallen world.

When you think of the weapons industry, like the Krupps in turn-of-the-century Germany, you have to wonder which came first.

Ideas like “the best defense is a good offense” and “dominate or be dominated” are the counsel of weakness. Or, at minimum, lack of self-confidence.

If you know you can win if necessary, there is no need to react vilently to every possible threat. Simply because you don’t feel threatened by things that you know you can beat.

That, I suspect, why you see so much violence in gang environments. The gangs and their members know they are weak. So they have to lash out whenever there is the slightest hint of resistance of disrespect — otherwise, they are sure they will get trashed themselves. Whereas that same kind of behavior gets, at most, a mutter of “idiot!” and otherwise ignored when it happens in my neighborhood.
