Not Sussing Seuss?

Dr. Seuss no doubt intended for young people of my generation to side with the Lorax, who speaks for the trees. But clearly the Once-ler was not without his fans, including the young lad who grew up to invent this machine:

I had a friend from Malaysia back in college. I once asked him what his dream was.

Simon: “To go into outer space, and find a planet covered in pristine forests, untouched by civilization.”

Me [surprised]: “Really? I would have never guessed!”

Simon: “Yes, I will cut down all the trees and sell them to the Japanese.”

As best I could tell, he was not joking.

There’s a much smaller version of this machine that harvests asparagus.

I can’t speak to this machine, or the particular tree harvesting situation shown, but some of the new tree harvesting machinery and techniques can greatly reduce the damage done by logging.

    Ingenuity is a good thing,

I agree, Peter… though the guy who used to run the bark-stripping machine down at the mill probably doesn’t in this case.
