Awesome video. Was it as good for Hubble as it was for Shuttle?

    It was damned incestuous, actually:

Indeed, Hubble and Shuttle are inextricably linked – both conceived and gestated with each other in mind in the seventies.

“They are like two kids growing up in the same family,” says Weiler. “They impacted each other’s designs.”

Early shuttles had that big afro, remember? With the extendo-arm fro pick in the cargo bay (built by Canada, if I recall).

    No. Really. It did.

The Hubble repair & maintenance missions have shown the utility of humans in space. There are other reasons to go, but the “pure” scienctists have often argued that anything done by humans in space could have been done more cheaply and better by robotic missions. Mainly that has been a call by the planetary astronomers for a bigger budget, but they’ve had a point. Given limited resources, it made sense for them to argue that point to try for a bigger piece of the budgetary pie.

But here they’ve been proven wrong in spectacular fashion. There are many reasons for people to go into space, but since resources are very limited at this time a utilitarian argument should carry a lot of weight. And oh baby, here it is….

Ron, I remember the ‘fros. They were all trying to look like a young Dr. J, and who could blame them?

Briefly NASA engineers considered adding a small basketball court to the shuttle bay, complete with backboard and a ABA red-white-and-blue ball designed for vacuum. But then they realized that (a) it would be too heavy, (b) Newton’s Third Law combined with zero-gee would make the game unplayable anyway, and (c) the ABA was doomed.

Some games can only be played deep in a gravity well, and basketball is best played near 1 gee.
