You have to wonder what the bakers’ union was thinking. When even the Teamsters will stand up and say “The company had nothing more to give. We reviewed thebooks and we know.” you have to think that this was pretty exceptionally self-destructive behavior.
I had one or two earlier this year. But I actually prefer Zebra Cakes when I want that kind of snack food. The point is that Twinkies are as American as Coca-Cola, Disney, Ford and purple mountain majesties.
And sure, someone will at least buy up the trademarks and other IP to produce Twinkies, but it won’t be the same.
Sorry, but the whole thing is, in its way, as depressing as the end of the Shuttle program. It’s just something else that Americans can’t do anymore. And we’ve got one of the plants down here, so that’s more people out of work in Orlando.
The good news is that apparently those things were more deadly than I suspected. The biggest hospital group in town just announced today that they’re laying off several hundred people. There just won’t be enough clogged arteries to go around now. Merry Christmas, now here’s your last week’s pay check and don’t let the door hit you on the ass on the way out. Gonna be a fun holiday season. The good news, though, is that with the economy humming along like it is those people should get new jobs any decade now.
